Hard Water FeedQuestions

Questions before you buy

Last updated 2026-10-15. Hard Water Feed, a DBA of Compton Consulting Incorporated (Ohio). Every number here is read from the same place the terms read it, so the two cannot disagree.

What exactly do I get each week?

Every newly filed domestic water well in your territory, ranked by the measured hardness of the groundwater near it, with a printable water report for each address; a 6×9 postcard mailed in your name to every one of them that has an address a card can be posted to; and the list of exactly who was mailed. What arrives shows a real week.

What does it cost?

$2.50 per card mailed, billed weekly for the cards mailed that week. The list and the reports come with the cards. A week with no new wells costs nothing. The price is the same in every territory and is not negotiated.

Is there a trial?

Yes. Your first 4 weeks are free, up to 60 cards: you see the real cards and the list of exactly who was mailed before the first invoice. The price per card is the same afterwards; it is a trial, not a lower rate.

What is the most I can be billed in a week?

Whatever you set. You can give your territory a weekly bill ceiling; cards over it roll to the following week rather than being dropped. You can also set a daily limit on how many go out.

What does the postcard look like?

Your state’s page shows the card its homeowners receive — for example Ohio’s. The front carries the area’s hardness, what hard water does to a house, and your free in-home test; the back carries your name, telephone number and licence number where your state requires one. Every card says ADVERTISEMENT, names you as the sender, and says why it arrived: a new well filed in public state records at that address.

Do I approve the card before anything is mailed?

Yes. Nothing is mailed until you have approved a proof with your name, telephone number and offer on it. A later change to the card means a new proof first.

When does my territory start?

Once we have watched it deliver for 8 measured weeks, so that we can tell you what a typical week looks like before you pay for one. The territory map shows how many of the 8 weeks each territory has measured and the earliest week it could open.

How do I pay?

By a card on file, billed weekly in arrears for the cards that went to print, one invoice listing every card. Our payment processor is Stripe; we never see or store your card details.

Can I stop? What do I owe if I do?

Stop any week by email. No cards go out after the week you tell us, and you pay only for cards already mailed. There is no minimum term and no notice period.

Can I pause?

Yes. Ask us to mail nothing for a while and the territory is held for up to 60 days; a pause does not lapse your exclusivity. After 60 days it returns to open.

Can I lose the territory while I am paying for it?

Only by not mailing it. Exclusivity is held by mailing every new well; if a weekly ceiling or daily limit you set leaves new wells unmailed for more than 4 weeks while the territory is active, the hold lapses and the territory may be offered to another dealer. Raise the ceiling, or pause instead, and it does not.

Is a card that comes back in the mail billed?

Yes. A card the Postal Service returns to us was printed and mailed. Your weekly list marks it as returned, so you can see which addresses the mail is not reaching.

Who am I paying?

Hard Water Feed, a trading name of Compton Consulting Incorporated, an Ohio company. The postal address is at the foot of every page and on the terms.

Is mailing a homeowner from a public record allowed?

The well records we read are published by each state under its public-records law, and we have checked each state’s statute before reading it (the privacy page lists them). Mail has no Do-Not-Call register; we hold no telephone numbers, so nothing here can produce a cold call. Every card carries the sender, the word ADVERTISEMENT, and the reason it arrived. Our terms have not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and the terms page says so.

Will my franchise or brand need to sign off?

Ask them before the proof, not after. Only what you approve goes on the card, and a card can carry your trading name without a logo if that is what your brand agreement allows.

What if a homeowner complains, or asks not to be mailed again?

The card is addressed to Current Resident, names you as the sender, and says it came from a public well filing. A homeowner who writes to us is taken off every future list before the next batch, and we tell you. We cannot remove anyone from the state’s own record; nobody can.

How do I know you mailed what you billed?

Every week you receive the list of exactly who was mailed, address by address, beside the invoice for that week. Every card is logged when it goes to print.

How accurate is the hardness figure on the card?

It is an area figure, not a test of that house: the median of laboratory samples from tested wells in the same grid square, or the county median where too few nearby wells have been tested, and the card says so. Where there is no figure at all, no card is sent. The method is published.

What if the state stops publishing, or a week is empty?

You are billed for cards mailed, so a quiet week costs little and an empty week costs nothing. We do not promise a fixed number of wells; filing volume is bursty, which is why a territory rather than a county is sold.

How old is the address by the time the card lands?

The week is the filing week. Wells are often filed weeks after they are drilled, and nobody working from the public record can do better. The card goes to print the week the filing reaches us; our one measured house test took 13 days from order to the last card in hand.

Is anyone else getting these addresses?

Not from us. One dealer per territory, for as long as it is active. The records themselves are public and anyone may download them; what you are buying is the qualification, the reports, the mail and our promise not to sell them to your competitor. Neighbouring territories overlap at the edges.

What can I do with the list?

Work the addresses, knock on them, put your branding on the reports, load it into your CRM, and keep everything you have received if you cancel. You may not resell or share it with another water treatment business.

Will the price change?

Not without 30 days’ notice, and never on cards already mailed.

Why isn’t my area on the map?

A territory is offered only when it produces at least 100 printable cards a year and at least 50% of its new wells have an address a card can reach. Below that a dealer would be paying for silence. Tell us where you work and we will say whether it clears the floor.

Do you have customers I can talk to?

Not yet, and this page will say so until it is false. There are no testimonials because there are no customers.

What response should I expect?

We do not know yet, and will not quote a number we have not measured. What we can give you is the arithmetic: at a typical $1,000 gross profit on an installed system, one install in every 400 cards pays for all 400. Hold your own close rate against that.

Is there a contract to sign?

The terms on this site are the agreement, and they are what you are agreeing to when you put a card on file. If you want a signed page, we will put your territory’s name on one that points at them.
